How to Reset and Reprogram Your Garage Door Opener (LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie)

LiftMaster and Chamberlain — Programming by Button Color

The LEARN button color tells you the radio frequency and compatible accessories:

• Orange button (315 MHz, Security+ 2.0): Most common on openers from 2011 onward. Press once to program, hold 10 seconds to erase all.
• Yellow button (315 MHz, Security+): Openers from roughly 2003–2010. Press once to program.
• Purple button (390 MHz): Older openers (late 1990s–early 2000s). Press once to program.
• Red button (315 MHz, premium models): Press once to program; hold 6 seconds to erase.

Adding a Remote (LiftMaster / Chamberlain)

1. Stand near the motor unit or use the wall button to open the door for access.
2. Press and release the LEARN button once. The LED next to the button lights up — you have 30 seconds.
3. Press and hold the button on the remote you want to program. Hold until the opener's light blinks twice or you hear two audible clicks from the motor unit.
4. Release the remote button. The remote is programmed.
5. Test from your car. If the door doesn't move, repeat — ensure you press the remote within the 30-second window.

Programming a Keypad (LiftMaster 877MAX or 877LM)

1. Enter your new 4-digit PIN on the keypad.
2. Press and hold the ENTER key until the keypad light blinks. Release.
3. Press the LEARN button on the motor unit once within 30 seconds.
4. Return to the keypad and press ENTER once.
5. The opener lights blink twice to confirm the PIN is saved.

Genie — Programming and Reset

Genie uses the same press-to-program concept with a few differences:

• The Genie LEARN button is on the back or side of the motor unit, often labeled "PROG".
• To add a remote: press and release LEARN/PROG. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the remote button until the opener light blinks once.
• To factory reset: press and hold LEARN for 10 seconds until the motor unit light blinks. All remotes are cleared.
• Genie Intellicode II remotes change the access code with every use — if a remote is out of sync, hold all three buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds to resync.

Factory Reset — When and Why

A factory reset erases all programmed remotes, keypads, and HomeLink vehicle buttons. Use it when:

• You moved into a home and want to clear the previous owner's remotes
• You lost a remote and want to prevent unauthorized access
• Programming is corrupted and remotes won't respond

After a factory reset, reprogram all remotes, keypads, and any vehicle HomeLink buttons. HomeLink programming varies by vehicle — consult your car's owner manual for the Homelink pairing process; it typically requires pressing a HomeLink button while pressing LEARN on the motor unit.

When Reprogramming Doesn't Work

If you've followed these steps and the opener still won't respond to the remote, the issue is likely the remote battery (try a fresh CR2032 or 2x AA), the remote receiver board in the motor unit (can fail after 10+ years), or the antenna wire is disconnected. If the opener responds to the wall button but not the remote at any distance, the receiver board needs replacement ($80–$150 with labor).
